Distinguished and Famous people from Barwon Heads
Barwon Heads has been a home base for international sport and a place where injured wildlife found care. Both connections are substantial local chapters in lives whose work reached much farther.
๐ด Cadel Evans
Tour de France winner Cadel Evans chose Barwon Heads as his Australian base and became familiar with the area's roads through training. Before his 2011 Tour victory he had excelled in mountain biking and competed at the Olympics. His final professional appearance came at the first Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in 2015. The town's association thus extends from everyday rides to an event that helped put those roads before an international sporting audience.
๐ฟ Tehree Gordon
Tehree Gordon established Jirrahlinga near Barwon Heads in the 1970s to care for injured native wildlife. The work grew to include support for people as well as animals, welcoming disadvantaged visitors and helping with the pets of people who were ill or elderly. National recognition included Senior Australian of the Year in 2004. Jirrahlinga later relocated to Chewton, but its origins and many years of animal care remain part of the Barwon Heads story.
